When submitting a Canadian passport application by mail, choosing the correct address is critical. Passport Canada operates separate mailing destinations depending on whether you use standard mail (Canada Post) or a private courier service (FedEx, UPS, DHL, Purolator), as well as your geographic region.

Important Guidelines for Mailing Your Application

  • Use Traceable Mail: Always send your application via registered mail, certified mail, or a trackable courier service. Your package contains sensitive original documents (e.g., birth certificates or citizenship certificates) that are costly to replace if lost.
  • Do Not Send Cash: Payment must be made via credit card (filling out the payment section on the application form), certified cheque, or money order payable to the Receiver General for Canada. Cash and personal cheques are not accepted.
  • Include a Self-Addressed Envelope: Passport Canada returns your original identity documents separately from your new passport. Using a pre-paid, trackable envelope ensures safer return delivery.
  • Mailing from the United States: U.S. residents applying by mail can use either the Gatineau courier address (for FedEx/UPS) or the Gatineau non-courier address (for USPS Registered Mail).
